Is my shop’s listing complete?

A one-page checklist for shop owners: your Google listing, your website, your directory links and your reviews. Print it, check each line with your phone in hand, and fix what’s left unchecked.

Why it matters: In our October 2026 check of 280 independent businesses around Aurora, 3 in 10 had no website in their directory listing, about 1 in 14 listed websites was broken, and only 76 of the 171 working sites had all four basics: a secure connection, a phone-friendly layout, hours on the page and a tap-to-call number. Most of the fixes on this list cost nothing.

To print: use your browser’s Print command (Ctrl+P on Windows, ⌘P on a Mac). The menu, footer and the notes around the checklist are left off the printout, so the checklist fits on one sheet.

Your Google Business Profile

Search your shop’s name on your phone and open your listing.

  • The listing is claimed, and the business owner is the Owner. Anyone helping you is added as a Manager.
  • The business name matches your sign, with no extra keywords added.
  • The main category is the most specific one for the business as a whole.
  • Your address shows only if customers come to you. If you go to them, the address is hidden and a service area is set (up to 20 cities or ZIP codes).
  • Today’s hours are right, and holiday hours are set ahead of time.
  • The phone number is a local number that rings your shop.
  • The website link opens your own site, and it works.
  • Any booking link lets a customer finish booking. It isn’t a social media page, a messaging link or a link shortener.
  • Your services or menu are listed in the words customers use.
  • Real photos: the storefront, the inside, your team at work. Something new in the last month or two.
  • The description says what you do, for whom and where, in plain words. If you serve customers in Spanish, it says so.

Your website

Open it on your phone, the way a customer would.

  • The site opens with https:// (no security warning).
  • Your hours are written as text on the page, not only inside a picture or on Facebook.
  • The phone number is a tap-to-call link.
  • The site links to your Google listing, so customers can read reviews and get directions.
  • Name, phone and hours match your Google listing exactly.
  • If many customers speak Spanish: at least one Spanish page with your services, hours and how to book.

Directory listings

Chamber of commerce, village or city list, downtown district.

  • The website link in each directory opens your current site, not a lapsed domain, a “coming soon” page or another business.
  • Your name and phone number match your Google listing and website.
  • Your Facebook and Instagram pages show the same name, phone and hours.

Reviews

  • You ask every customer the same way, not only the happy ones.
  • You never offer discounts, freebies or payment for a review.
  • No bought, traded or made-up reviews, and none from staff or family.
  • You reply to reviews, good and bad, calmly and by name.
  • You have a direct review link to share (free tool: apvisible.com/google-review-link-generator).

What no checklist covers: Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity. Nobody can pay for a better spot or promise one. This list covers the parts you control.
