Short answer: After you finish the verification steps, Google says its review takes up to 5 business days, and rarely longer. Which method you get, phone, text, email, video or postcard, is chosen by Google. Postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days and expire after 30, so don't edit your name, address or category while you wait.
You don't pick the method
Google decides which verification options you see, based on your business type, public info, region and hours. Sometimes you need more than one. If video verification is offered, Google recommends using it.
What each method needs
- Phone or text: you must be able to answer the business phone or get its texts. An automated phone menu won't receive the code.
- Email: follow the steps in the email.
- Live video call: only during your business hours. Be ready to show an outside sign or street sign, your equipment or products, and something only staff can reach, like the register or a back room.
- Postcard: most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days.
While you wait for a postcard
- Don't edit your business name, address or category. The code in the mail stops working.
- Don't request a new code. That cancels the one already in the mail.
- Don't share the code with anyone, even whoever manages your profile. Google says it will never ask you for it.
Then Google reviews it
Once you finish the steps, Google reviews your information. Some profiles are verified instantly, for example when the website is already verified in Google Search Console. You'll get an email when it's done. If the "Get verified" button shows up again later, Google couldn't fully verify the business and you'll need to try again.
Verification matters more than almost anything else on a new profile. It's step 2 in why your shop isn't showing up on Google Maps.
Also asked
Can I change my Google verification method?
No. Google says verification methods are chosen automatically and can't be changed. If your profile shows more than one option, you can try another one.
Why is Google asking me to verify my business again?
Usually because some business details were recently changed. Google may ask for more details or ask you to update your information, then you re-verify.
