How do I check my website's speed for free?

Use Google's free PageSpeed Insights to test your website on phone and desktop. What the score means, the three Core Web Vitals and why results change.

Short answer: Use Google's free PageSpeed Insights: paste your web address at pagespeed.web.dev and run it. You get separate mobile and desktop reports. A lab score of 90 or above counts as good, 50 to 89 needs improvement, and below 50 is poor. Look at the mobile report first, and test the pages customers use most, not just the home page.

Two kinds of results

  • Real-visitor data comes from Chrome users over the previous 28 days. It only shows up if the page or site has enough visits. A small or new site often has none, and that's normal.
  • Lab data is a simulated visit on a mid-range phone over a mobile network (or a desktop on a wired connection). That's where the 0 to 100 score comes from.

The three numbers that matter most

Google calls these the Core Web Vitals. "Good" means:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): the main content shows within 2.5 seconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): 0.1 or less, so buttons don't jump around while the page loads.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): 200 milliseconds or less, so the page responds quickly when someone taps.

Why your score changes

Google says scores vary from run to run because of network conditions and the testing hardware. Run each page two or three times and look at the middle result, not the best one.

Common fixes on small-shop sites

  • Photos uploaded at full camera size and shown small. Resize them.
  • Too many add-ons: pop-ups, chat bubbles, trackers and sliders you no longer use.
  • Big moving banners at the top of the page.

Speed is one part of a good visit. A fast site still needs your hours, a tap-to-call number and clear services. The free shop website grader checks those.

Also asked

What is a good PageSpeed Insights score?

Google says a lab score of 90 or above is good, 50 to 89 needs improvement and below 50 is poor. A good lab score doesn't always mean real visitors have a good experience.

Why does PageSpeed Insights show no real-user data for my site?

Chrome's real-user report needs enough visits. A recently published page or a site with too few visitors may not have enough data, so only the lab test is shown.
